Dunfermline Abbey retains its Norman nave, and the adjoining royal palace survives as a roofless ruin with sections of its outer wall still standing above the glen. The medieval nave and palace ruins are in the care of Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument, while the adjoining abbey church remains an active place of worship of the Church of Scotland. The nave and ruins are open to visitors, and the church holds regular services.
About Dunfermline Abbey & Palace
Dunfermline Abbey began as a Benedictine priory founded in the eleventh century under Queen Margaret of Scotland and was elevated to an abbey by her son David I. It became a royal burial place, holding the tomb of Robert the Bruce, and the adjoining palace served as a residence for Scottish monarchs. Charles I was born there in 1600.
