The house preserves its complete eighteenth-century Robert Adam-designed exterior and principal interiors, along with restored outbuildings and walled gardens, essentially original fabric with extensive conservation work. It is owned by a charitable trust associated with the King's Foundation and is a category A listed building. It is open to the public on a ticketed, guided tour basis.
About Dumfries House
Dumfries House was built between 1754 and 1759 for William Crichton-Dalrymple, fifth Earl of Dumfries, to designs by the Adam brothers. It was furnished as a Palladian country residence with an important collection of Chippendale furniture commissioned specifically for its rooms. The house exemplified Scottish aristocratic taste and architectural patronage in the eighteenth century.
