HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Down Cathedral & St Patrick's Grave.

The cathedral's present Gothic Revival fabric dates largely from an eighteenth century rebuilding on a medieval site, and a large granite boulder in the graveyard marks the traditional burial place of Saint Patrick. It is maintained by the Church of Ireland as an active cathedral parish. The graveyard is freely accessible and the cathedral is open to visitors outside of services.

About Down Cathedral & St Patrick's Grave

Downpatrick has long been venerated as the traditional burial place of Saint Patrick, alongside a monastic site said to date to the fifth century. A Benedictine priory was established on the hill in the late twelfth century by the Anglo-Norman lord John de Courcy, later developing into the present Down Cathedral. It became a major pilgrimage site.
