HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Dover Roman Lighthouse, Kent.

The Roman lighthouse, or pharos, preserves its lower octagonal masonry tower substantially from Roman construction, with the upper portion rebuilt in later medieval times, standing within the grounds of Dover Castle beside the Anglo-Saxon church of St. Mary in Castro. It is managed by English Heritage as part of the Dover Castle site. Access is included with a ticketed visit to Dover Castle.

About Dover Roman Lighthouse, Kent

Roman forces built a lighthouse, or pharos, at Dover in the early centuries of their occupation of Britain to guide ships into its harbor. It stood as one of a pair flanking the harbor entrance, guiding Roman shipping across the Channel. In the Anglo-Saxon period it was incorporated into the adjoining church as a bell tower.
