The Georgian style mansion built for Jamaica's first Black millionaire, George Stiebel, survives with its original rooms, verandas, and surrounding grounds intact. It is designated a national monument and is managed by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. The house is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with its grounds freely accessible for shops and cafes.
About Devon House
Devon House was built in 1881 by George Stiebel, Jamaica's first Black millionaire, who made his fortune in mining and shipping in Venezuela. The mansion combined Georgian and Caribbean architectural styles and served as a symbol of Black achievement in colonial Jamaica. It later passed through several owners before the Jamaican government acquired it.
