About Devil's Dyke, Cambridgeshire
Anglo-Saxon rulers built Devil's Dyke, a linear earthwork stretching about seven miles across Cambridgeshire, probably in the fifth to seventh century to defend East Anglia's western frontier. The dyke cut across the ancient Icknield Way, controlling movement along this prehistoric route. It formed part of a group of similar Cambridgeshire dykes built during a period of Anglo-Saxon territorial conflict.
