The island preserves the ruins of an early medieval monastic settlement, including a well-preserved round tower, several ruined churches, and high crosses, set within open grounds. It is in state care as a historic monument, accessible by boat. It is open to the public on a seasonal, freely accessible or lightly supervised basis.
About Devenish Island Monastic Site
The monastery on Devenish Island in Lough Erne was founded in the sixth century by St Molaise as a center of learning and worship in early Christian Ireland. Over succeeding centuries it grew to include a round tower and, from the twelfth century, an Augustinian priory. It served as an important religious community in County Fermanagh until its later decline.
