HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Deerhurst.

The site preserves the Anglo-Saxon fabric of St Mary's Priory Church, including its distinctive triangular-headed doorways and carved font, along with the separate Odda's Chapel, one of the few Anglo-Saxon buildings in England with a securely dated inscription. St Mary's remains an active Church of England parish church, while Odda's Chapel is in the guardianship of English Heritage. Both are freely open to visitors.

About Deerhurst

A monastic community was established at Deerhurst in the eighth century, and its church became one of the most important centers of Anglo-Saxon religious life in England. Earl Odda built a small chapel there in 1056 in memory of his brother Aelfric, recorded on a dedication stone giving a precise date. Deerhurst remained a significant Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical site.
