The hillfort preserves its multiple concentric earthen ramparts and ditches enclosing the hilltop, along with the excavated but now grassed-over outlines of former entrances and interior structures, since no built fabric remains above ground. It is owned and managed by Hampshire County Council as part of a country park. The site lies in open ground and is freely accessible to walkers at all times.
About Danebury Hillfort, Hampshire
Danebury was built as an Iron Age hillfort in Hampshire around the sixth century BCE, defended by ditches and ramparts enclosing round houses and grain stores. It served for centuries as a fortified settlement and refuge for the surrounding farming population before its decline around 100 BCE. Twentieth-century excavations became a foundation for understanding Iron Age Britain.
