Dali Ancient City stands between the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake in a region long shaped by Bai communities and trade across southwestern China. Nearby settlements served as capitals of the Nanzhao kingdom from the eighth to ninth centuries and the Dali kingdom from 937 to 1253. Those states connected the Tibetan Plateau, Southeast Asia, and China’s interior through diplomacy, warfare, religion, and commerce. The present walled town occupies a later location but inherited the political and cultural importance associated with the Dali plain.

Mongol armies conquered the Dali kingdom in 1253, and Yunnan was incorporated into the Yuan Empire. After the Ming defeated Yuan power in the region, officials established the present town in 1382 as a fortified administrative and military center. Walls and gates defined a rectangular plan, while streets formed a regular grid. Water descending from Cangshan was directed through channels toward Erhai, supporting households, gardens, workshops, and markets. The plan combined imperial administrative order with building forms and water practices rooted in local life.

Dali became a meeting place for Bai, Han, Hui, Yi, Tibetan, and other communities. Bai courtyard houses, often built around enclosed compounds with whitewashed walls and dark tile roofs, gave neighborhoods a distinctive appearance. Temples, schools, guilds, markets, and government offices reflected both local traditions and the institutions of the Ming and Qing states. The city’s position on routes carrying tea, horses, metals, salt, and textiles helped sustain a diverse urban economy even when political authority was centered far to the east.

During the Panthay Rebellion of the nineteenth century, Muslim rebel leader Du Wenxiu made Dali the capital of an independent regime that controlled parts of western Yunnan. Qing forces retook the city in 1872, ending nearly two decades of conflict with severe loss of life across the province. In the twentieth century, new roads and the growth of nearby Xiaguan shifted commerce and administration away from the old walls. Earthquakes, rebuilding, political campaigns, and modernization also altered much of the historic fabric.

Recognition as a national historic and cultural city encouraged restoration of gates, walls, streets, and traditional façades. Tourism now dominates many central blocks, where guesthouses and shops occupy buildings presented as historic Bai architecture. Some visible defenses are reconstructed rather than untouched Ming fabric, and commercial renovation can obscure the town’s long history as an inhabited regional center. Dali remains important because its grid, waterways, religious sites, and household forms reveal how imperial government and local Bai culture interacted on a frontier linking several major Asian regions.
