HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site.
The museum occupies the old Lumpkin County Courthouse, a brick building on the town square built in the 1830s and believed to be Georgia's oldest surviving courthouse, along with period gold-mining tools and specimens in its collection. It is owned and operated by the State of Georgia as a state historic site within the Georgia state parks system. The building is open to the public as a ticketed museum.
About Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site
Lumpkin County built this courthouse in 1836, a few years after an 1828 gold discovery sparked the first major gold rush in the United States. Dahlonega grew into a mining center and, from 1838, hosted a federal branch mint that coined local gold. The rush predated the California gold rush by two decades and drew thousands of prospectors.
