HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Dafni Monastery.

Dafni Monastery preserves its central octagonal katholikon church, notable for its extensive Byzantine mosaics including the Christ Pantokrator in the dome, along with surrounding monastic wall remains, though earthquake damage has required significant structural restoration over time. It is under the care of the Greek Ministry of Culture and forms part of a World Heritage Site grouped with other Byzantine monuments. The monastery has been open to visitors on a limited, ticketed basis pending restoration work.

About Dafni Monastery

Dafni Monastery was founded in the sixth century on the site of an ancient sanctuary of Apollo, then rebuilt as a fortified Byzantine monastery in the eleventh century. Cistercian monks held it briefly in the thirteenth century before it reverted to Orthodox use. It became celebrated for its mosaics, among the finest examples of middle Byzantine religious art.
