HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Dún Aonghasa.
The Bronze and Iron Age hillfort survives as massive dry stone concentric ramparts perched on sea cliffs, together with an outer band of upright stone spikes known as a chevaux de frise, with much of the stonework original though partly consolidated in places. It is a National Monument managed by the Office of Public Works. The site is freely accessible on foot, with a visitor center nearby.
About Dún Aonghasa
Dún Aonghasa is a stone hillfort on a cliff on Inishmore in the Aran Islands, built and expanded in phases from the Bronze Age into the Iron Age. Its ramparts and field of upright stone spikes, a chevaux de frise, suggest defense and ritual use. It served as a focal point of community life on Ireland's western edge.
