HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Custom House.
The building's granite and Portland stone facade, dome, and riverfront colonnade survive, though the interior and much of the roof were destroyed by fire in 1921 and subsequently rebuilt. It is a protected national monument in state ownership, housing Irish government offices. Public access is limited to a visitor center and exterior viewing, as the working offices are not generally open to the public.
About Custom House
The Custom House in Dublin was designed by James Gandon and completed in 1791 to house Ireland's customs and excise administration on the River Liffey. It later became the seat of local government administration under British rule. In 1921, Irish Republican forces burned the building during the War of Independence, destroying most of its records and interior.
