HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Cumberland Island National Seashore.
The seashore preserves an undeveloped barrier island landscape along with the ruins of the Carnegie family's Dungeness mansion, the restored Plum Orchard mansion, and other historic structures amid maritime forest and dunes. It is managed by the National Park Service as a unit of the National Park System. Access is limited to visitors arriving by ferry or private boat, with much of the island open for hiking and exploration.
About Cumberland Island National Seashore
Cumberland Island was used for centuries by Timucua and other Native peoples before Spanish missionaries and later planters established plantations there. In the 1880s the Carnegie family built the Dungeness mansion and other estates on the island as a private winter retreat. The island shifted from plantation agriculture to a symbol of Gilded Age wealth.
