The abandoned town preserves its medieval street plan, a Norman watchtower, the ruined church of San Nicola, and rows of stone houses left standing since the population was evacuated after landslides, though many structures are partially collapsed and unstable. The site is owned by the Comune di Craco and managed for public visitation through a local cultural association. Access is limited to guided tours led along fixed walkways for safety reasons.
About Craco Ghost Town
Craco developed as a hill settlement in Basilicata during the medieval period, growing under Byzantine and then Norman rule around a fortified castle and church. It functioned for centuries as a farming community controlling the surrounding countryside. Landslides in the twentieth century forced its abandonment, making it emblematic of depopulated hill towns in southern Italy.
