Battle of Cowpens

About Cowpens National Battlefield

At Cowpens on January 17, 1781, Daniel Morgan’s American force defeated Banastre Tarleton through a carefully arranged defense of militia, Continentals, and cavalry. The victory destroyed much of Tarleton’s command and helped draw Cornwallis into the exhausting pursuit that led to Guilford Courthouse and ultimately Yorktown.

HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Cowpens National Battlefield

At Cowpens on January 17, 1781, Brigadier General Daniel Morgan defeated Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton through a carefully arranged defense. Morgan placed riflemen forward, militia behind them with instructions to fire controlled volleys and withdraw, and seasoned Continentals on rising ground, while cavalry waited in reserve. Tarleton mistook the planned militia withdrawal for collapse and drove his men forward in disorder. A Continental counterattack, cavalry charge, and militia return enveloped much of the British line. The victory destroyed a large portion of Cornwallis's light troops and helped draw him into the exhausting pursuit that preceded Guilford Courthouse.

The site belongs to an era when public events depended on local roads, waterways, households, farms, workshops, and coerced as well as free labor. Decisions made by prominent leaders were implemented by soldiers, sailors, messengers, servants, enslaved people, craftspeople, and families whose names are less often preserved. War and political change could bring opportunity, displacement, confiscation, shortages, or violence to the same community. Reading the event in its physical setting helps recover those connections and explains why this particular place mattered.

The modern marker anchors this history even though the original building, road, field, or shoreline may have changed or disappeared. Its concise inscription is a starting point rather than the whole story. The location allows visitors to consider distance, terrain, neighboring properties, and lines of movement while comparing public memory with a fuller record. In that way, the site connects a national narrative to the specific local choices, resources, inequalities, and sacrifices from which it was made. Considered in broader context, the episode demonstrates how the Revolution and early republic were assembled through movements and decisions made at hundreds of local places. The surviving point gives those historical relationships a tangible scale.
