The site preserves the Cotton Tree, a large silk-cotton tree standing at the town center, along with the stone gate structure known as King's Yard Gate nearby, both largely original standing features. It falls under Sierra Leonean state and municipal heritage protection. Both are freely accessible in open public space in central Freetown.
About Cotton Tree & King's Yard Gate
The Cotton Tree stood in central Freetown, where formerly enslaved settlers, many of them Black Loyalists from Nova Scotia, reportedly held a thanksgiving service when founding the colony in 1792. Nearby King's Yard later received Africans freed from intercepted slave ships after Britain abolished the trade. Both sites marked Freetown's founding as a settlement for freed people.
