The historic center of Coro retains its grid of colonial streets lined with earthen and adobe buildings blending Spanish, Dutch, and indigenous building traditions, along with its churches and the dunes separating the town from its port at La Vela. It is a World Heritage Site, with conservation overseen by Venezuela's national cultural heritage institute in cooperation with municipal authorities. The town remains inhabited, and its streets and plazas are freely accessible.
About Coro and its Port
Spanish colonists led by Juan de Ampíes founded Coro in 1527, making it one of the earliest European settlements on the South American mainland. It served briefly as capital of the Province of Venezuela and, through its port at La Vela, became a hub of colonial trade. Coro also hosted the first Catholic bishopric in South America.
