HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Cork City Gaol.

Cork City Gaol preserves its nineteenth-century castellated stone prison building, including its restored cell blocks, governor's house, and exercise yards, though it ceased use as a working prison long ago. The building is maintained by a heritage trust as a museum property. It is open to the public on a ticketed, self-guided and guided tour basis.

About Cork City Gaol

Built in the early nineteenth century, Cork City Gaol replaced an older prison to hold men, women, and children convicted of offenses ranging from petty theft to serious crimes. Many inmates convicted during the Great Famine years were transported to Australia. The prison closed in the early twentieth century and later housed a radio transmitting station.
