HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Corfinium (Corfinio).
Little monumental fabric survives above ground at Corfinium beyond scattered foundations, sections of an amphitheater, and a necropolis, with most of the ancient town's remains still unexcavated beneath surrounding fields, and the nearby Romanesque basilica of San Pelino incorporates ancient spolia. The archaeological area falls under Italy's state heritage authorities. The site consists largely of open ground with freely accessible, unstaffed remains.
About Corfinium (Corfinio)
Corfinium was the chief town of the Paeligni before Rome's Italic allies chose it as their rebel capital during the Social War of 91 to 88 BCE. The rebels renamed it Italica and minted their own coinage as a rival capital to Rome. After the allies' defeat, Rome absorbed the town and stripped it of this status.
