Copano Bay served as one of Texas's most important natural ports during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, functioning as the principal seaborne gateway for the Refugio, Goliad, and San Patricio region before the rise of larger Gulf Coast ports. Its deep, sheltered waters made it a practical landing point for ships bringing settlers, supplies, and trade goods into the Texas interior, and the port town that grew at El Copano functioned as a customs and immigration point, notably serving as the arrival site for Irish colonists settling the Refugio and San Patricio empresario grants in the 1830s. During the Texas Revolution, Copano's function shifted to a military one: it served as a landing site for Mexican General Jose de Urrea's troops advancing toward Goliad, while at other times it supported the movement of Texian supplies and volunteers, making it a strategically contested logistical point during the conflict. After Texas independence, Copano continued limited use as a shipping point but was gradually eclipsed by railroads and by the deeper, better-developed ports at Corpus Christi and Rockport, and the town itself was eventually abandoned. Today the bay area near Fulton and Rockport functions primarily as a recreational and fishing destination, with calm waters used for boating and sport fishing; its historic port role survives only through historical markers and local heritage interpretation rather than any active commercial shipping use.
