San Felipe de Austin served as the unofficial capital of Stephen F. Austin's colony, and it was there that Anglo-American settlers convened the Convention of 1833 to draft petitions asking the Mexican government for reforms, including separate statehood for Texas apart from Coahuila, repeal of restrictions on immigration, and other administrative changes. The convention functioned as a civic and political gathering rather than a military or commercial event, bringing together delegates from across the colonies to debate grievances and formalize demands in writing. Stephen F. Austin personally carried the resulting petitions to Mexico City, a mission that ultimately led to his arrest and lengthy imprisonment by Mexican authorities, an outcome that further inflamed tensions between settlers and the central government. The convention built on similar civic organizing at the earlier Convention of 1832 and reflected San Felipe's broader function as the administrative, legal, and political center of Austin's colony, where land titles were recorded, disputes were adjudicated, and colonists gathered for public business. Today the site is preserved and interpreted as part of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, operated by the Texas Historical Commission, which includes a visitor center, museum exhibits, and reconstructed and archaeological features documenting the town's role as the colonial capital and site of early political organizing that helped set Texas on the path toward revolution and independence.
