HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Cong Abbey.
The ruined Augustinian abbey church, a partly reconstructed cloister arcade, and the chapter house survive, along with the small Monks' Fishing House built over the adjoining river. The site is in the care of the Office of Public Works as a National Monument. It stands in open ground and is freely accessible to the public at all times.
About Cong Abbey
Cong Abbey traces its origins to a monastery traditionally founded by Saint Feichin in the seventh century, later rebuilt as an Augustinian house in the twelfth century. Rory O'Connor, the last High King of Ireland, retired there and died in 1198. The abbey held the Cross of Cong, a reliquary made to enshrine a relic of the True Cross.
