HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Conímbriga.
Extensive Roman ruins survive, including well preserved floor mosaics in the House of Fountains, the forum, bath buildings, an aqueduct, and a defensive wall hastily built across part of the town in late antiquity. The site is administered by Portugal's Ministry of Culture through its associated museum. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis as an archaeological park with an on site museum.
About Conímbriga
The site originated as an Iron Age hillfort of the Lusitanian peoples before Rome absorbed it into Hispania during the first century BCE. Under Roman rule it grew into a prosperous walled town with a forum, baths, and an aqueduct. Conímbriga served as an administrative and commercial center until Germanic invaders sacked it in the fifth century.
