The Minute Man monument stands in a traffic island; use a safe public pedestrian approach. Nearby Compo Beach vehicle parking requires a current emblem or daily gate payment during May 1–September 30. The town reports nonresident seasonal emblems sold out for 2026, with daily gate options available. Check the current daily rate and posted facility hours; bathrooms depend on beach operations. These beach rules do not establish access on the monument island.

About Compo Hill Battlefield Site

Compo Hill recalls the final fighting as British troops returned to their ships after the Danbury raid in April 1777. Patriot forces challenged the retreat near Westport’s shore. The later Minute Man monument provides a commemorative visitor point within a shoreline landscape that has changed since the engagement.

The Minute Man monument at Compo Road South and Beach Road commemorates the 1777 action. The monument is a later work of remembrance, and neither its position nor the beach’s present layout defines the full battlefield or every point of embarkation.

History happened here at Compo Hill Battlefield Site

British troops landed at Compo Beach in April 1777 before marching inland toward Patriot supplies at Danbury. Their return brought fighting through Connecticut communities and toward the Saugatuck River. Westport’s historical interpretation follows the retreat and the Patriot attempts to impede the column as it approached its ships.

On April 28, Patriot forces opposed the British at Compo Hill during this final phase. The encounter connects the shore with the inland raid rather than an isolated coastal battle. Later commemoration through the Minute Man monument preserves the event’s local memory, while historical maps are needed to reconstruct the changed terrain.
