HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta.
The site preserves the Renaissance and Baroque palace complex built for the Farnese family, including the Farnese Theatre and the galleries now housing the Galleria Nazionale and archaeological collections, with the theater itself a careful postwar reconstruction after wartime bombing destroyed much of the original wooden structure. It is owned by the Italian state and administered as a museum complex under the Ministry of Culture. The complex is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta
Built from 1583 under the Farnese dukes of Parma, the Palazzo della Pilotta served as an administrative and court complex adjoining their residence, taking its name from a ball game played in its courtyards. It later housed the Teatro Farnese, an early Baroque theater, along with archives and galleries. The complex anchored Farnese court culture in Parma.
