Joshua Barney went to sea as a boy and entered the Revolutionary War in the Continental Navy. He endured capture and exchange, served in several vessels, and won his greatest wartime success as captain of the Pennsylvania ship Hyder Ally in 1782, when he captured the more heavily armed British ship General Monk after a close engagement in Delaware Bay. Barney's later service in the War of 1812 made him one of the few American naval heroes prominent in both conflicts.

Born in Baltimore, Barney at an early age moved with his family to a nearby farm on Bear Creek in the Patapsco Neck section of the County. When only 12 he went to sea. In the War for Independence he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on the “Hornet” and had the honor of flying the 1st American Flag displayed in Baltimore. At the end of the war he was Captain of the “Hyder Ally.” In the War of 1812 he served as a privateers man and later as Commodore of a flotilla of gunboats in Chesapeake Bay. In 1814 while serving heroically in the defense of Washington he was wounded and captured. He died in Pittsburgh and was buried there.

Naval warfare joined ship handling, commerce, privateering, coastal defense, and international supply. American forces usually operated with fewer ships and resources than the Royal Navy, making local knowledge, initiative, and captured vessels especially important. Ports and shore batteries protected trade and government while sailors carried the war across bays and oceans.
