The two seated stone statues of Amenhotep III survive as original carved quartzite, though one was cracked by an ancient earthquake and later repaired with added masonry blocks, while the mortuary temple they once fronted has almost entirely disappeared. The site is protected and administered by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. It stands in open ground and is freely accessible to visitors.
About Colossi of Memnon
Egyptian builders erected the Colossi of Memnon in the fourteenth century BCE as statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III guarding his mortuary temple at Thebes. After an earthquake damaged one statue, it emitted a singing sound, leading ancient visitors to associate it with the hero Memnon. The statues became a celebrated destination for ancient tourists.
