About Colonial Courthouse Site (Historic Halifax)

Halifax’s colonial courthouse was associated with North Carolina’s Provincial Congress and the political decisions of 1776. The town’s Halifax Resolves authorized support for independence. A marker and archaeological interpretation recall the former courthouse, whose precise orientation and meeting-room footprint remain uncertain.

Archaeological investigation has examined possible associated features near the surviving 1832 Clerk’s Office. The courthouse marker provides a commemorative point within Historic Halifax. The later office, visitor buildings, and modern county courthouse are separate structures rather than surviving 1776 legislative rooms.

History happened here at Colonial Courthouse Site (Historic Halifax)

Halifax developed as a commercial and county center on the Roanoke River. Its first courthouse, built in the 1760s, served trials, voting, and record keeping. During the Revolution, the town hosted North Carolina’s Provincial Congress. The Halifax Resolves of April 12, 1776, authorized delegates to support independence in the Continental Congress.

Halifax also hosted the work of establishing state government in 1776. Later growth and deterioration led to replacement of the colonial courthouse. Archaeological studies have investigated possible remains, but the state account describes its exact position and orientation as unresolved. The courthouse marker therefore identifies the historical association more securely than an exact room or foundation outline. Nearby preserved buildings illustrate later phases of the town’s civic life.
