About Colonial City of Santo Domingo (Zona Colonial)
Santo Domingo was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus and relocated to the west bank of the Ozama River in 1502, becoming the first permanent European settlement in the Americas. It served as the seat of Spanish colonial government and housed the Americas' first cathedral, university, and hospital. It anchored Spain's early administration of its New World empire.
