The Colline Gate, on the northeastern wall of ancient Rome, was the site of a decisive battle in 82 BCE during Sulla's civil war. There, forces loyal to Lucius Cornelius Sulla defeated an army of Samnites and Marian partisans marching on the city. The victory secured Sulla's control of Rome and led to his appointment as dictator.
