Substantial stretches of the Roman town wall survive along with the Balkerne Gate, the largest Roman gateway to survive in Britain, both built of Roman brick and septaria rubble. The walls are a scheduled monument in the care of Colchester City Council, with sections incorporated into the town's museums estate. They stand in open ground within the modern town and are freely accessible to the public.

Colchester's town walls were built by the Romans in the decades after 60 CE, when the earlier settlement of Camulodunum, Britain's first Roman colonia, was destroyed during Boudica's revolt. The Balkerne Gate formed the monumental western entrance to the rebuilt walled town. The fortifications protected Roman Britain's earliest colonia and administrative center.
