HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Colca Valley Inca Terraces & Yanque Church.
The valley preserves extensive pre-Hispanic agricultural terracing still under cultivation, along with the colonial era Church of the Immaculate Conception in Yanque, whose baroque stone facade survives from an eighteenth century rebuilding after earthquake damage. The terraces are worked by local farming communities, while the church falls under the Catholic Archdiocese of Arequipa and Peruvian cultural heritage protection. The terraces are freely visible from the valley roads, and the church remains an active place of worship open to visitors.
About Colca Valley Inca Terraces & Yanque Church
The agricultural terraces of the Colca Valley were built beginning around the eleventh century by the Collagua and Cabana peoples to farm the steep Andean slopes, later incorporated into the Inca Empire. Stone-faced terracing and irrigation allowed intensive cultivation at high altitude. A Spanish colonial church was later built in the valley town of Yanque.
