HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Clava Cairns.
The site preserves several Bronze Age chambered passage cairns and ring cairns, together with their surrounding kerbstones and associated standing stones, all substantially intact in their original drystone construction. It is a scheduled ancient monument in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The cairns stand in open ground near Culloden and are freely accessible to visitors at all times.
About Clava Cairns
The Clava Cairns were built as Bronze Age burial monuments around 2000 BCE, comprising passage graves and ring cairns encircled by standing stones. Local communities used them to inter their dead and likely held ceremonies tied to the sun's cycle, since several passages align with the midwinter sunset. The site formed part of a wider prehistoric ceremonial landscape near Inverness.
