The complex centers on a large tapering stone obelisk topped by a globe, built to mark the equatorial line, along with museum pavilions and reconstructed monuments arranged around a central plaza. It is administered by a municipal public company under the Quito metropolitan district. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Ciudad Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World City)
Ciudad Mitad del Mundo was built in the twentieth century near Quito to commemorate the site where the French Geodesic Mission, led by Charles Marie de La Condamine, calculated the equator's location in the 1730s. A monument and museum complex were built there to mark the line and the mission's achievement. The site became a symbol of Ecuador's scientific heritage.
