HISTORIC PRESERVATION at City Tavern.
Philadelphia’s original City Tavern was demolished in the nineteenth century. A 1970s reconstruction occupies the historic site within Independence National Historical Park, reproducing the exterior and period-style interiors with museum and hospitality spaces, but containing no substantial original eighteenth-century building fabric.

City Tavern was a leading Philadelphia meeting place for Continental delegates, military officers, merchants, and foreign diplomats. Banquets and informal discussions there supported political cooperation and the French alliance. The tavern’s social spaces helped sustain the networks directing the Revolution from the national capital.
