About Città di Castello
Città di Castello developed from an ancient Umbrian settlement into the Roman town of Tifernum Tiberinum in the upper Tiber valley. It grew through the medieval period into an independent commune before coming under the rule of the Vitelli family during the Renaissance, when much of its civic architecture was built. It remained a regional center of trade in Umbria.
