HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Citadel of Calvi.

The site preserves the fortified walls, bastions, and gates of a Genoese citadel enclosing an old town of narrow streets and stone houses, along with a cathedral and governor's palace within its walls. It is maintained by French state historic monument authorities in conjunction with the town of Calvi. The citadel's streets and ramparts are freely accessible to the public.

About Citadel of Calvi

The Citadel of Calvi was begun in the thirteenth century and developed over subsequent centuries as a stronghold of the Republic of Genoa on Corsica. Its fortifications were repeatedly strengthened to defend the port against rival powers and pirate raids in the Mediterranean. Local tradition, though disputed by historians, claims Calvi as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.
