The Citadel of Besançon preserves its extensive Vauban-designed fortifications, including bastions, ramparts, and several museum buildings within the walls, largely intact as built. It is owned by the municipality of Besançon and is part of a World Heritage Site recognizing Vauban's fortifications. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis as a museum and zoo complex.
About Citadel of Besançon
The Citadel of Besançon was built in the 1670s and 1680s by the engineer Vauban for Louis XIV, after France annexed Franche-Comté, to fortify the city above the Doubs river. It formed part of Vauban's system of frontier fortresses protecting eastern France. During the Second World War German forces used it as a prison and execution site for resistance members.
