Cissbury Ring survives as a large Iron Age hillfort earthwork, with its double ramparts and ditches enclosing the earlier Neolithic flint mine shafts beneath. It is owned and managed by the National Trust as open access downland. The site lies in open countryside and is freely accessible to walkers at all times.
About Cissbury Ring, West Sussex
Iron Age communities built the massive hillfort of Cissbury Ring on the South Downs around the third century BCE, enclosing an earlier Neolithic site that had been mined for flint. Its ramparts and ditches served as a defended settlement and refuge for surrounding farming communities. It was later reoccupied during periods of Saxon and Viking threat.
