About Cidade Velha Historic Centre
Portuguese settlers founded Ribeira Grande, now Cidade Velha, on Santiago Island in 1462, making it the first European colonial town built in the tropics. It grew into a major Atlantic port for the transatlantic slave trade and a stop for ships sailing between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Its fortifications and churches served this maritime network.
