HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Christ Church Cathedral.

The medieval cathedral and its crypt, one of the largest in Britain or Ireland, survive, though much of the visible upper fabric reflects a thorough Victorian era restoration rather than original medieval work, and the adjoining chapter house survives only as low ruins. The cathedral belongs to the Church of Ireland under its dean and chapter. It remains an active place of worship, open to visitors on a ticketed basis outside of services.

About Christ Church Cathedral

Sitric Silkenbeard, the Hiberno-Norse king of Dublin, founded Christ Church Cathedral around 1030 alongside Bishop Dunan. Following the Anglo-Norman invasion, Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, and Archbishop Laurence O'Toole rebuilt it in stone from the 1170s. The cathedral served as Dublin's principal church and, in 1487, hosted the coronation of the pretender Lambert Simnel.
