HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Chogha Zanbil.
The ziggurat of Chogha Zanbil survives as a massive stepped mudbrick and baked-brick structure, now partly consolidated, along with temple foundations and sections of the surrounding city walls, though much of the upper stages and original facing brick are lost or reconstructed in part. The site is under the authority of Iran's Ministry of Cultural Heritage, and it is a World Heritage Site. It lies in open ground and is accessible to visitors as an archaeological park.
About Chogha Zanbil
King Untash-Napirisha of Elam founded the city of Dur-Untash around the thirteenth century BCE, centered on a massive ziggurat dedicated to the god Inshushinak. The temple complex also honored other Elamite and Mesopotamian deities and included palaces and royal tombs. It remained unfinished and was destroyed by Assyrian forces, standing as a major monument of Elamite religion.
