HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Chiusi Etruscan Museum & Tombs.
The site preserves several Etruscan chamber tombs cut into the surrounding hillsides, including painted examples, alongside collections of sarcophagi, cinerary urns, and bucchero pottery held in the town's national archaeological museum. Both the museum and the tombs are administered by the Italian state through its Ministry of Culture. Visits to the tombs are generally by guided tour, while the museum is open on a ticketed basis.
About Chiusi Etruscan Museum & Tombs
Chiusi, known to the Etruscans as Clusium, was one of the twelve leading cities of the Etruscan League by the seventh century BCE. Tradition credits its king, Lars Porsena, with a campaign against Rome in the late sixth century BCE, though the episode remains legendary. The surrounding necropolises held elaborately carved chamber tombs and cinerary urns.
