The Chief Vann House survives as a restored two story brick plantation house built for the Cherokee leader James Vann, with its original brick shell, some interior woodwork, and surrounding grounds, though several outbuildings are later reconstructions. It is owned and operated by the State of Georgia as a state historic site. The house is open to the public on a ticketed, guided tour basis.
About Chief Vann House Historic Site
The Chief Vann House was built in 1804 for James Vann, a wealthy and influential leader of the Cherokee Nation, as the centerpiece of his plantation in northern Georgia. The brick Federal-style mansion, unusually grand for its region, was worked by enslaved laborers who supported Vann's farming and trading operations. It symbolized Cherokee elite wealth before removal.
