HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Chesters Roman Fort, Northumberland.
Chesters preserves the excavated remains of a Roman cavalry fort, including its headquarters building, commandant's house, and one of the best-preserved Roman military bathhouses in Britain beside the North Tyne, along with an on-site museum housing the Clayton collection of inscriptions and sculpture. It is managed by English Heritage and forms part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Chesters Roman Fort, Northumberland
The Roman army built this fort, known as Cilurnum, in the second century under Hadrian to garrison an auxiliary cavalry unit along Hadrian's Wall. Its bathhouse beside the River North Tyne served soldiers stationed there for generations. The fort formed part of the wall's defensive system, guarding a crossing point along the Roman frontier in northern Britain.
