Chemtou preserves substantial Roman era ruins including a theater, an amphitheater, baths, a bridge, and remains associated with its ancient marble quarries, alongside an on-site archaeological museum, with the standing remains largely unreconstructed. The site is under the authority of the Tunisian Institut National du Patrimoine. It is an archaeological park open to visitors, with the museum accessible on a ticketed basis.
About Chemtou (Simitthus)
Chemtou, ancient Simitthus, was a Numidian settlement in the Medjerda valley of Tunisia that grew wealthy from nearby quarries of yellow-veined marble prized throughout the Roman world as giallo antico. Under Roman rule from the first century BCE it became a major marble-exporting center. Its stone was used in temples and palaces across the empire.
