HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Chefchaouen Historic Medina.

The medina retains its walled old town of narrow, stepped lanes lined with buildings washed in shades of blue, centered on the kasbah fortress with its garden and small museum, and the adjacent Uta el-Hammam Mosque and minaret. It is administered by the local municipality in coordination with Morocco's Ministry of Culture, and the kasbah is a protected monument. The medina is a living residential quarter freely open to the public, with the kasbah and museum accessible by ticket.

About Chefchaouen Historic Medina

Moulay Ali ibn Rashid founded Chefchaouen in the late fifteenth century as a fortified base against Portuguese incursions on the Moroccan coast. Muslim and Jewish refugees fleeing the Spanish Reconquista later settled within its walls, shaping the medina's distinctive architecture. The town grew as a center of trade and Andalusian culture in the Rif mountains.
