HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Charles Fort.

The star-shaped bastioned fort survives with its massive stone ramparts largely intact, enclosing the ruined shells of former barracks, officers' quarters, and magazines. It is a national monument in the guardianship of the Office of Public Works. The fort is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with guided tours available.

About Charles Fort

Charles Fort was built between 1677 and 1682 to a star-shaped design by William Robinson, defending the harbor at Kinsale. It was besieged and captured by Williamite forces during the war of 1690, exposing weaknesses in its landward defenses. The fort remained an active military garrison for the British and later Irish forces into the twentieth century.
