About Charles Fort
Charles Fort was built between 1677 and 1682 to a star-shaped design by William Robinson, defending the harbor at Kinsale. It was besieged and captured by Williamite forces during the war of 1690, exposing weaknesses in its landward defenses. The fort remained an active military garrison for the British and later Irish forces into the twentieth century.
